What I reach for on my own projects. Work is a different stack with different constraints, and it gets its own section below.
01 / My own projects
02 / Worth explaining
Two GitHub accounts on one machine and not a single private key on disk - 1Password’s SSH agent does the lot, and I wrote down how to make it juggle both because I’ll need it again.
Side projects used to start by buying a domain. Now they start with Claude prototyping something, and I only go shopping for a name once it looks like it might work.
Every domain I own is now one of two shapes. It either sends mail, and gets the full SPF, DKIM and DMARC treatment, or it’s parked so thoroughly it can’t send anything at all. Getting there took a day, four DNS providers and a lot of digging. That’s the whole story.
03 / At work, over the years
Tools I’ve picked at work, across a lot of projects and clients.
04 / Much earlier
Sublime Text saving over SFTP straight onto a shared box, one MySQL account for everything, and a wildcard subdomain so a new folder was a new site. It was a terrible setup and I got an enormous amount done on it -here’s what it looked like in 2016.
Ask me next year and half of this will have moved.
